State Street Deli is more than a sandwich shop—it’s a Mason City tradition built on passion, community, and flavor. Owners John and Pamela Nardi began their journey in the food industry decades ago, operating two McDonald’s franchises in Chicago. After selling those businesses, they knew they wanted to stay in the food world but dreamed of something more personal and unique.

That dream took shape thanks to a friend from their McDonald’s franchising days who introduced them to the owner of the historic Brick and Tile Building in Mason City—a landmark full of character and charm. The building owner envisioned a deli inside, and John and Pamela decided to give it a try. That was 13 years ago, and what started as an idea has grown into one of Mason City’s most beloved dining spots.

From the very beginning, the Nardis fell in love with the people of Iowa. Their warmth and friendliness made John and Pamela feel welcome from day one—and that sense of community is what keeps them here. Over the years, State Street Deli has become known for original sandwich recipes you won’t find anywhere else, crafted with premium meats, fresh produce, and the finest Wisconsin cheeses.
